چکیده

Abstract The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow (CoCoRaHS) network is a well-regarded, trusted source of precipitation data. network’s volunteers also provide weather climate observations through daily comments, significant reports, condition monitoring reports. Designed to meet need for local information about drought events their impacts, “condition monitoring” was initiated as pilot project in North Carolina South 2013 launched nationally October 2016. Volunteers regularly report on how precipitation, or lack thereof, affects environment community by ranking current conditions seven-point scale ranging from severely dry wet sharing written narratives. This study assesses the usefulness these reports decision-making, drawing >7,100 submitted Carolinas between 2016 June 2020. period encompasses Carolinas’ patterns extreme such droughts, wildfires, hurricanes (“drought busters”). Three aspects were evaluated reports: extent which volunteers’ assessments dry-to-wet correspond objective indicators (EDDI, SPI, SPEI) typically employed drought; qualitative depict changing conditions, focusing two flash droughts 2019; actual use National Weather Service offices, State Climate Offices, U.S. Drought Monitor authors, response committees. Although report content can vary widely, findings show that reflect meteorological on-the-ground details are being incorporated into existing processes.

Elementary School Children Contribute to Environmental Research as Citizen Scientists.

Research benefits increasingly from valuable contributions by citizen scientists. Mostly, participating adults investigate specific species, ecosystems or phenology to address conservation issues, but ecosystem functions supporting ecosystem health are rarely addressed and other demographic groups rarely involved. As part of a project investigating seed predation and dispersal as ecosystem func...

Sensor-Internet Share and Search—Enabling Collaboration of Citizen Scientists

Over the last decade, embedded sensing systems have been successfully deployed in a range of application areas, from education and science to military and industry. These systems are becoming more robust, capable, and widely adopted. Yet today, most sensor networks function in isolated patches, each with different mechanisms to deliver data to their users, and often have no formal methods to sh...

Citizen noise pollution monitoring

In this paper we present a new approach to monitor noise pollution involving citizens and built upon the notions of participatory sensing and citizen science. We enable citizens to measure their personal exposure to noise in their everyday environment by using GPS-equipped mobile phones as noise sensors. The geo-localised measures and user-generated meta-data can be automatically sent and share...

When Scientists Become Social Scientists: How Citizen Science Projects Learn About Volunteers

Online citizen science projects involve recruitment of volunteers to assist researchers with the creation, curation, and analysis of large datasets. Enhancing the quality of these data products is a fundamental concern for teams running citizen science projects. Decisions about a project’s design and operations have a critical effect both on whether the project recruits and retains enough volun...

The Art of Nurturing Citizen Scientists through Mixed Reality

Modern society requires the public to have an increased knowledge of science beyond the basics, with average people needing to understand concepts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics that rapidly evolve throughout their lifetimes. Our future depends upon closing the gaps between citizen and scientist to create a “Citizen Scientist.” Mixed Reality innovations provide the magic to...
